Watergrove village
Watergrove reservoir is situated north of Wardle and the A58 Halifax Road and south of Bacup. Rochdale is to the west and Littleborough to the east.
Watergrove reservoir was built in the 1930s. Rochdale Corporation chose Watergrove as a suitable site to build a large reservoir, due mainly to a prolonged drought. The ruins of the old village of Watergrove lie under the large expanse of water, and dotted around the landscape above the reservoir there are several ruins originally belonging to the submerged village, in 1930 there were nearly 50 houses, two pubs, a smithy, two mills and a thriving chapel.
Set into the reservoir wall 100 metres from the car park, there are a number of datestones, drinking troughs and window mullions rescued from the old Watergrove village.
