About Chris Davies MEP

Chris Davies is the Liberal Democrat MEP for the whole of the North West of England.

Chris Davies was born in Lancashire, grew up in Cheshire, has served as a councillor on Merseyside and as an MP for Greater Manchester. As a competitive fell runner he claims Cumbria as his spiritual home!

He is married to Carol, a school teacher and has a daughter named Kate, who is 10 years old.

Prior to his election to the European Parliament he was a marketing consultant, having run his own business for most of the past 15 years. He is a former Member of Parliament for Littleborough & Saddleworth (Oldham/Rochdale) and a former Chairman of the Housing Committee in Liverpool.

He is the Liberal Democrat spokesman on the Environment, Transport and Consumer Affairs in the European Parliament.

Chris Davies is the spokesman on the environment for the British Liberal Democrats in the European Parliament.

The Environment Committee, of which Chris is a member, is charged with considering legislation on the environment, public health and consumer protection.

Chris has been actively involved in the examination of directives on a wide range of subjects, most notably: water policy, ozone depleting substances, scrap cars, GMOs and the sale of tobacco. He is Parliament's rapporteur on "ozone in ambient air" and as such has been striving to reduce air pollution across the EU and boost public access to information on local air quality.

The British Liberal Democrats are part of the European Liberal Democrat group (ELDR) in the Parliament. This is the third largest political group and comprises 52 members from liberal parties in ten EU countries.

Chris is also a member of the Parliament's delegation to the EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee. This Committee aims to foster relations between Cypriot parliamentarians and MEPs in preparation for Cyprus' accession to the EU. The Committee meets twice a year, alternatively in Nicosia and Brussels.

He is also a supporter of the Parliament's "Eurogroup on Animal Welfare", which is an informal group that provides a forum in which MEPs can debate animal welfare issues.

Chris is secretary of the "Friends of Kashmir" network of MEPs.
